This blog is intended as a space to share my favourite recipes and give a little slice of the life and loves of a Brighton foodie.
Aside from the perennial favourites Nigel, Nigella and the Moro Sam’s, I try not to follow a recipe. If I’m having an uninspired day and resort to following one verbatim, it never seems to work. So, my cooking style is particularly vague, hence the amounts I give are never definite and weights are mainly guessed for your convenience as I won’t have weighed them myself. Portions are vague too. Sometimes I have a glut of food, and plenty to put in the freezer/eat for lunch the next day or dinner can be a little skant if I’ve misjudged amounts. This is never a problem as it’s quite nice to have an excuse to revisit the fridge and larder for a late night snack.
I am also in the process of studying to be a nutritionist so you may find me ranting about good food and slipping in the odd nutritional aside. For me, food and health are interchangeable, and certainly not mutually exclusive. We can’t live well without good, healthy food but I’m also no yoghurt-weaving, sprout preacher. Food must be enjoyed, and that means a stonking piece of New York cheesecake as much as a super-salad. It has to taste good, primarily, then we all need to exercise our own restraint (or not).
I will try and add a few recipes a week, children, life and work permitting.
Hiya… haven’t had much luck with using tamarind! Pray tell as I miss this addition since your delicious curries…!
xx
Hi Abby,
Haven’t cooked a lot of curry recently as the little one objects by screaming through the night, so I miss them too! Not sure what you’ve had trouble with but I can recommend ways of using it. I think you’ve had my Keralan chickpea curry so I’ll pop that on a new post for you – this is how to use tamarind I think as the recipe’s not too overspiced, but has a good kick. It’s also really good in dhals, where you use it instead of tomatoes (both have an anti-flatulent effect!)…
